Series OverviewGary, the time traveller with a wife in the present and a girlfriend in wartime London, is back for a fourth season that will see marriage and fatherhood come into the mix. The immediately obvious changes are the women in Gary's life. Nicholas Lyndhurst is back and still managing to keep the generally loathesome Gary seem quite a nice bloke really (despite infidelity, fraud, lying, cheating and generally being a bad husband and friend, not mention adding bigamy to the list this time around). Victor McGuire returns as the hapless, hopeless and generally having a bad time of it Ron and Christopher Ettridge continues to be dim and, well, just dim as PC Reg Deadman. Dervla Kirwan has gone as Phoebe Bamford and Elizabeth Carling takes over the role. To be fair, she makes a fair job of it too, never quite being as believable or as feisty as her predecessor, but managing to make the character her own without ever losing the sense of who she was before. Emma Amos attempts to copy the performance of Michelle Holmes as Yvonne and captures most of the accent and attitude so that, by the time the season in well underway the shock of the new has worn off. The comedy remains weak to nonexistent and there is very little done with the concept to freshen it up or take it in a different direction. The show is well past its sell by date, new ingredients or not. TopYou're Driving Me CrazyGary tries to deal with two women from different time periods both coping with the early onset of pregnancy. This makes Yvonne sexually rampant, which dampens Gary's ardour, and puts Phoebe off sex altogether, which makes him fancy her all the more. The differences between the two time periods that this show inhabits have never been more obvious than in the differing attitudes towards women and pregnancy. The show also has differences in that the two women in Gary's life now look completely different thanks to new leading ladies. Emma Amos makes a better job of making the transition in Yvonne much easier to handle. She isn't similar to look at, but she makes a good job of the accent and the character, playing her in a very similar way. Dervla Kirwan was one of our favourite things about the show as Phoebe and so Elizabeth Carling has a lot to live up to. On this early showing (and no, she doesn't get enough screen time to really judge her on) she is going to struggle somewhat. Actresses aside, it's business as usual with the rest of the cast intact and at home with their characters and the rather uninspired comedy lines that they try to make work. TopIn The MoodWhilst Yvonne struggles with morning sickness, she foists her six year old nephew on Gary to look after for the day. Unfortunately, he doesn't pay a lot of attention until it becomes clear that the boy has somehow found his way back through the rift into war torn London. The show settles down almost straight away and both the new actresses settle into their roles pretty quickly. The comedy remains pretty weak, but there is also no sign at present of the dramatic streak that the series kept trying to fall into either. TopOut of TownGary receives a suprise visitor at his home which plays havoc with the holiday that he was planning to take with Phoebe in Yvonne's absence. Once again someone comes needing Gary's sympathy, help and support and once again the only thing that concerns him is how it's going to concern him. There aren't enough funny lines to get by with either. TopAnd Mother Came TooWith Ron in prison for beating up his wife's boyfriend, Gary fails to be the good friend by failing to make bail - twice. In the meantime, bad news about Phoebe's husband leaves the door open to them getting married.. If Gary Sparrow were played by anyone other than Nicholas Lyndhurst then his innate dislikability would have sunk this show a long time ago. He treats his mate Ron with such utter disdain that it goes beyond comedy, which is a shame because this episode has more than the usual quota of laughs. Drama, though, also plagues the episode as the news of Phoebe's husband's death undermines the comedy, which in turn undermines the comedy, making for a very uneven episode that is both better and worse than usual. TopThe Leaving of LiverpoolGary and Phoebe travel to Liverpool to break the news of her husband's death to relatives, but Gary is also aware that Ron's grandfather became a hero when he saved a child from a burning building. When he meets the man, however, he finds him somewhat lacking in the hero stakes and alters his own future to one where Yvonne is married to someone else and Ron is a vicar. A half-decent plot and some pretty funny jokes? What has come over GOODNIGHT SWEETHEART? The change of locale and characters brings a breath of fresh air to the show and Phoebe's gran is a very nice character, both warm and acerbic. We certainly wouldn't mind her becoming a fixture. TopHow Long Has This Been Going On?Yvonne has a miscarriage on her return for Korea. This leads to a complicating encounter between her mother and Ron. Gary, meanwhile, is faced with the prospect of being beaten up by Reg Deadman's love rival. The fact of Yvonne's miscarriage pulls the rug from under any attempt at comedy in this latest episode. Some things just don't lend themselves to being joked about. Otherwise, the whole Ron/Yvonne's mother thing would have been quite amusing. TopEasy LivingYvonne decides that the alternative therapies she has been using would make for a good business proposition. Phoebe is getting worked up about the wedding and Reg Deadman is in trouble with his sergeant. Gary is no longer enjoying his time travel (soemthing that we haven't been doing for a long time) and he is being a miserable git all around. It's no surprise when both Yvonne and Ron call him the pits. Fortunately he comes good at the end, but not in time to save the episode. TopCome Fly With MeGary has to try and cope with two stag parties, but things take a turn for the worse when he wakes up in a damaged allied bomber about to crash into the sea in the company of an insane pilot. Gary's lying ways catch up with him when all his tales of derring do behind enemy lines get him stuck in a real plane over real enemy lines. It's not even remotely convincing, though, and not all that funny. Neither are either of the stag parties, but at least it does end a first for the show - a cliffhanger. TopHeartachesWhen Gary fails to show up for his wedding, Phoebe is understandably miffed. When she fails to show up for the hastily rescheduled wedding, it's because of cold feet. Yvonne is blissfully unaware of any of this, wrapped up in her nascent alternative therapy plans. Managing mainly to keep a comedy free zone going, this episode wants to deal with relationships and the fear of committment. What it ends up dealing with is a fear of being funny. TopCareless TalkRon has the hots for Yvonne's friend, a reporter, and tells all about Gary's secret in a bid to be more interesting. At first thinking it to be a joke, he manages to head off questions, but then the reporter decides to set a trap for him. The frisson of Gary being at risk of being caught raises this episode above most of the others and perhaps that is the way for the show to go to infuse some sort of interest back into a premise that was pretty short on it in the first place. It's not very funny, though. TopThe Bells Are RingingGary's son is due to be born and his attention is on that, so much so that he is not aware that his wife has lost all their money on her new schemes and Ron's divorce has robbed him of his business. In sitcom world men are always rubbish when it comes to dealing with births and this show certainly isn't original enough to buck that trend. Childbirth has never been a great subject for humour and so it isn't here, but there is a certain power to the main couple welcoming their newborn son just as the church bells start to ring again.
