ReviewAs a comet drifts over the small Irish town of Ballymoran, a red-suited stranger appears in the home of the Cassidy family. Presuming him to be from space, they make him welcome and the whole town takes him to their hearts. Then, however, his superior officer arrives and Zonad finds that nobody wants him anymore. The comic potential for aliens arriving on Earth has been long known (VISIT TO A SMALL PLANET in 1960 anyone?) and the concept has been done to death by TV shows such as MORK AND MINDY or 3rd ROCK FROM THE SUN, so it's hard to see where this small Irish production thinks its going to get its laughs from. To be fair, there aren't that many laughs. In fact there are very few. The script is poor on the comedy front and hasn't got any original ideas in its head at all. What ZONAD does have some lively comic turns such as Simon Delaney as Zonad, Janice Byrne as schoolgirl tart Jenny and Rory Keenan sending up the young teen lead of every 50s sci-fi B movie you've ever seen. They are all game performers and try to do their best with the material that they have. If you came across Zonad whilst channel hopping the TV then you might warm to its likeable nature and charming performers, but shelling out the hard-earned cash for it? Well now that's something else. TopTrailerTop |
