Fun With Dick and Janet - Part 1The family return to Dick with a special present, a new wife for him. This, inevitably puts his relationship with Mary in jeapordy, so he decides to be the most obnoxious man ever. 3rd ROCK FROM THE SUN is back for its third season and nothing, it appears, has changed. The introduction of Roseanne Barr as the new wife isn't about to raise the subtlety level any, but she is a welcome addition, playing down her own star status to give and effective supporting turn. TopFun With Dick and Janet - Part 2Whilst the rest of the family fall in love with Janet's cooking, Dick tries everything to prevent mary finding out about his new marital status. The conclusion of the two-part opening story and it effectively changes the status of Dick and Mary's relationship, keeping that fizzing along. Roseanne Barr proves to be fun enough that you almost regret her departure. TopTricky DickFollowing the revelation that he is married, Dick and Mary determine to act as adults and end up in an escalating spiral of practical jokes. Tommy, meanwhile, is dragged into the band least likely to succeed. Anybody needing ideas to revenge themselves on an ex need look no further than this episode of 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN for some really clever ideas. This is not, however, the recommended way to behave. TopDick In LawDick spends the weekend with Mary and her parents looking for a way to win her back. They turn out to be the bitterest people alive and give Dick a whole new perspective on marriage and Mary a whole new perspective on her parents. Meeting the prospective parents in law is always a situation fraught with issues and when they are as bad as these pair then it's easy comedy, but you can't help thinking that there ought to have been more. TopScaredy DickIt's Hallowe'en, a time to scare and be scared. Hallowe'en gives the 3RD ROCK FROM THE SUN cast the opportunity to run around farcically mugging and shouting about being scared. Not much change there then. TopMoby DickThe situation with Mary has turned Dick to food as a comfort measure. As a result, he has put on quite a few pounds and determines to shed the pounds. America's obsession with weight and fitness (odd considering the levels of obesity there) come under the microscope. By this point, only those who really connect with this kind of humour or the characters are going to be left watching it as it's just the same as any other episode. TopEleven Angry Men and One DickDick gets called for Jury service and finds the whole process somewhat stressful, not least when the clearly guilty defendant is a man who was once nice to him. The vagaries of the justice system get the 3RD ROCK once over. The better story, however is that of Sally dumping her cop boyfriend Don in favour of an artist and adopting the most ridiculous english accent. TopA Friend in DickNow that his relationship with Mary is over, Dick realises that he has no friends. A chance meeting with Don the cop leads to an obsessive friendship. Sally, meanwhile, starts to get tired with the artist. There's very little here to distinguish this episode from any of the others, but the moment when the audience comes out from a Riverdance type show and start dancing is a real hoot. Top7 Deadly ClipsOver a dinner consisting mainly of chocolate, the Solomon family ponder the meaning of the seven deadly sins and how none of them affect their behaviour. A sure sign of overrunning a budget is the existence of the clips show in which a lame framing device is used to package a repeat of a number of cuts from previous shows. This is it and it doesn't manage to be any funnier the second time around. TopTom, Dick and MaryDick becomes obsessed with finding the identity of Mary's new admirer, never for a second imagining that it could be Tommy. The secondary story with Harry being deprived of TV is much more interesting, and funnier, than the love triangle of the main story. TopJailhouse DickDick decides to rehabilitate an offender following a visit to Don the Cop. Unfortunately, neither he nor the rest of the family can truly relax in the presence of a man who was once a criminal. There is very little here to actually mark this episode out from all the others. TopDick On A RollAfter an accident puts Dick in a wheelchair, he decides to make a stand (or a seat) for disabled people's rights. Meanwhile Tommy tries to get into the local club. Again the support story steals the limelight from the main one. It isn't the second strand with Tommy trying to get into the club, but rather the return of Mrs Dubcheck's daughter into Harry's life that provides all of the main laughs. TopThe Great DickdaterDick decides that it’s time to move on from Mary and start dating other women. No review of this episode is available at this time. If you would like to add one, click here to e-mail it to us. Top24! 36! 24! Dick! - Part 1The town of Rutherford is suddenly overrun with beautiful women. One of Dick's students wants to date him, Tommy gets a major hot looking girlfriend and Harry, well he gets Cindy Crawford. Sadly, they're all from Venus and want to take over the planet. Sally is the only hope for mankind. This is quite fun. After some of the more disappointing recent episodes, having the aliens caught up in a story that is bigger than just them works well and proves to be much more interesting than the usual 'Dick overreacts to something else' of the week storylines. It's also the episode that gives us the pleasure of seeing Nina moonwalk with delight. What more could you ask for? Top24! 36! 24! Dick! - Part 2Dick and the boys cross America to take on the evil, but gorgeous, Venusians in their plan to take all of Earth's stuff through the medium of the ultimate beer commercial. Their female ways have seduced Sally and the men don't even have tickets to the Superbowl. But then again Mary does. The conclusion to this two parter is one of the best episodes that the show has come up with in a long time. There is a delicious spoof of the climax to every James Bond movie ever made with the destruction of the underground lair and the manner in which the beer commercial is usurped is wonderful. Note to the writers, more like this please. TopPickles and Ice CreamHarry's pet from back home shows up on Earth in human form (but in all other ways a dog). A cover story is needed. Sally decides to be pregnant, much to consternation of Officer Don. Let's make fun of pregnant women! And men who overreact around pregnant women! This is all old stuff that just gets trotted out and given the 3rd Rock shouty treatment. TopAuto EuroDickaDick discovers the joy of a one night stand with a woman from a movie queue only to learn that there are always consequences. Sally, on the other hand, discovers the joys of sports cars. This is an average episode that has nothing to offer over any other episode. It's safe to say that the concept is starting to get old. TopStuck With DickWhen a romantic interlude that Dick plans for Mary goes wrong, they get locked in the library and learn a few things about each other. Meanwhile, Sally takes over the Tupperware party that Mary was supposed to be giving and proves to be a top salesperson. This episode is wholly unremarkable, though it has the usual amount of funny moments. Jane Curtin's horrified responses are the only highlight. TopPortrait of Tommy As An Old ManTommy gets tired of being treated as the kid of the group and decides that he's had enough and is going to retire. Sneaking into a retirement home and find that he gets on really well with the residents. In the meantime, Don inadvertantly steals Sally's underwear. Tommy's dichotomy of being an old man in a young boy's body has always been one of the more interesting points in 3rd ROCK FROM THE SUN and something that rarely gets the spotlight. Perhaps the reason is because it makes little impact when it does, the subplot of Sally's underwear being much funnier. TopMy Daddy’s Little GirlMary’s father walks out on her mother, something that he does every year, but this year he finds Sally is interested in his old stories about the war and he is certainly interested in her, much to Mary's horror. Forget the main plot, the subplot of Harry's time as a shock jock on the local campus radio is the one that provides the entertainment, although there really isn't a load of that in this episode. TopThe Physics of Being DickWhen Dick learns that physics is not a subject that commands the respect and devotion of every single person on the planet he determines to become a cop and cross-examines a criminal with Don the cop. Harry, meanwhile, becomes a bartender. There's more of the same here, but it's scary how episodes of the show are becoming almost interchangeable. TopJust Your Average DickWhen everyone calls the Solomons wierd, Dick decides that it's time for the family to become truly average. The Solomons in beige is not a pretty sight. Middle America comes in for a bit of a kicking as the moral majority tackle anything outside of their 'rules' by ruthlessly eradicating it. That aside, only the brief appearance by John Cleese marks this out from all the other episodes. TopDick and the Other GuyThere's a new professor in Rutherford and he is every bit as eccentric as Dick, not to mention self-centred and brilliant. He is also that much more accomplished that he manages to beat Dick at everything. Until Dick realises that the newcomer is an alien. John Cleese returns as the new nutty professor, playing the part just like John Lithgow with a British accent. This kind of comedy he can do without really trying and he doesn't seem to be really trying. As a result, the episode doesn't shine as anything special. TopSally and Don’s First KissSally decides that two years is long enough to go in a relationship without kissing her boyfriend and prepares herself for the task by reading far too many romance novels. How can a normal kiss ever compare? Does this spell the end of their love affair? Having seen Don the cop in Karaoke, seeing Sally in a flowing romance novel cover dress aims at making the episode memorable. It's certainly more memorable than most this season, but that's not saying that much. TopWhen Aliens CampDick decides that the family needs some serious group time and determines to take them all camping, despite not knowing the first thing about it. Mary Albright, however, turns out to be something of an expert, something that causes friction amongst the group. Then Dick becomes king of the forest scouts. It's actually not that much fun watching a lot of people bitch about being in the countryside when they'd rather be at home. Making them aliens doesn't really add that much, although the running gag of Harry being shot at because of his furry coat is funny enough. TopThe Tooth HarrySally gets the key to Don's house, Dick and Mary get to star in the university promotional video. Meanwhile Nina and Harry start to connect at the dentists. The romance between Nina and Harry and is a sweet and lovely one that comes to a very funny and superbly set up ending. As for the rest, it's the usual. TopEat, Drink, Dick, MaryDick organises a celebration dinner for the anniversary of the night that he and Mary did the dirty deed for the first time. Sally determines to use the occasion to do it for the first time with Don whilst Vicki Dubchek moves back into Harry's life, bringing with her a jealous ex who kidnaps Harry just as he receives an important message from the Big Giant Head. It's the final episode, so extra effort has been put in to add laughs to the mix, but there really isn't that much more going on. Tommy's secret chef persona is fun, though, and it's always good to see Vicki back. As for the cliffhanger, it's not much of one. Top |
