Review

This is the story of Lee Adama's first Executive Officer from her first arrival on the Battlestar Pegasus as a green lieutenant to her final, heroic act on board a cylon basestar. In that time she witnesses many of the signature events that shaped the Pegasus and its Admiral Cain. She saw the Admiral execute her XO for refusing an order, killed innocent civilians on her commander's orders, uncovered the cylon spy in their midst and got herself busted down to cook. She is also there when a team of scientists from Galactica's fleet are taken prisoner by a forgotten cylon force and a risky rescue mission has to be mounted.

This special feature length episode slots into the tumultuous events at the centre of season 2 and is something of a curiosity. The story is a full season past the point here and so there is no real tension as we know all of the principals survive. It does not advance the story any, though it does fill in some of the backstory of the Pegasus such as Cain's relationship with the cylon and just how the massacre on the Scylla actually took place, but neither of these really justify the retreading of old ground.

The newer part of the story with its discovery of a forgotten tribe of cylons carrying out experiments on human captives in a search for their own evolution is both interesting and contrived at the same time. It never really convinces and the rescue mission puts far more lives at risk than it saves, making you wonder why they would ever undertake it.

The sight of cylon ships and centurions from the original series is a real blast from the past, but does leave you wishing for more of them.

All of the principal actors do what is expected of them, but the diffuse nature of the plot means that none of them have enough to do.

Since this develops the main story not at all and details only things that didn't need detailing the prevailing feeling at the end is one of, despite being well enough done, why bother?
